Need Participants for Focus Group

Attention!

I need help for a focus group project required by our audience research methods class. We need a total of 10 females and 10 males aged 16 - 25 (Young Adults, Singaporeans) for a 2 hour focus group session held by us on the topic of Reality TV (interesting right, yes so come please). But since we're splitting the work for sampling, I need 2 males and 3 females for my part. Just in case you're curious / not sure what a focus group is..

What is a Focus Group?

A focus group is a form of qualitative research in which a group of people is asked about their attitude towards a product, service, concept, advertisement, idea, or packaging. Questions are asked in an interactive group setting where participants are free to talk with other group members.

***********

We will be providing free pizza, snacks and drinks as well. No worries, it's just like an informal chat among a small group of around 7 people in a session. Only requirement is that you have to watch Reality TV programmes before. Some Reality TV styles include (you don't have to watch all to qualify, as long as you've watched and followed one or more it's sufficient) :
  • Documentary Style: Big Brother, Temptation Island
  • Celebrities: The Simple Life
  • Elimination/ Game Shows: American Idol, Deal of No Deal, Who wants to be a millionaire?, Survivor, The Amazing Race
  • Dating Based Compeition: The Bachelor, A Shot at Love
  • Job Search: America's Next Top Model, Project Runway, The Apprentice
  • Fear Centric: Fear Factor
  • Makeover: Extreme Makeover
So in a nutshell, I need..
  • 2 Males and 3 Females
  • Aged 16 to 25
  • Have watched Reality TV Programmes
  • Free for one of the following sessions
Focus Group Sessions
  1. 9th September (Tuesday) - 7pm-9pm
Venue: Tentatively NTU WKWSCI Focus Group Room

  2. 11th September (Thursday) - 7pm-9pm
Venue: Tentatively NTU WKWSCI Focus Group Room

  3. 13th September (Saturday) - 1pm - 3pm
Venue: Tentatively somewhere in Town (ie. cafe or library discussion room)
So please please help me if you can!
Please leave a tag if you're interested :)
I'm eyeing on you guys especially to help me out in this, since I adore mixed rice so much.

SMRT Challenge

SMRT Challenge 2008

Okay, there are 40 slides in the briefing presentation today and every slide contain something important (ie. rules, how the game is played, etc) so I will try my very best to summerize and jot down the most important stuff you guys need to know. Let me do it in parts so that it's clear for everyone. PLEASE READ (if not I'll kill you 'cause I typed like mad!!)

ADMINISTRATION STUFF
  • Firstly, Congrats to us. Because many teams signed up and not every team can participate. FYI we are in the open category and there are around *coughs* 250 teams in it. That's not including the others in Family and School category.
  • Please bring your NRIC on the actual day
  • T-shirt collection will only be held next week, please let me know your t-shirt size based on the measures below. Sizes are while stocks last, so if there is no more size, I will take one size bigger. If I don't receive your size, I will gauge based on personal opinion.
  • T-shirt sizing:(corresponding measurement of T-shirt's circumference around the chest): XXS - 34 ", XS - 36", M - 40, L - 42", XL - 44"
  • For reference for the guys, my brother wore M size last year. Anyway, this year's design is white. Nicer than the one last year
GROUPING
  • First Group: Xia (Leader), Yilin, Melodie and Mildred
  • Second Group: Delon (Leader), Zhiyang, Choon Peng, Zhi Qin
  • The rules says that "Teams cannot communicate or cooperatre on Challenge codes and missions with other teams or any other persons at any point during the challenge. Teams found in breach of this rule will be immediately disqualified"
  • But who cares, let's do it discretely and run together haha
WHAT EACH TEAM WILL RECEIVE
  1. Brief Pack at the pre-challenge briefing today (it's with me and my brother) :
    • SMRT challenge Mechanism, Rules and Regulations Powerpoint Slides
    • Integrated MRT and LRT system map
    • SMRT courtesy and safety brochure (which is damn important because some mission requires us to answer courtesy and safety questions. *yawn* ) So please grab a brochure at any mrt stations and study it.
    • Challenge T-shirt (I will collect for you guys next week)
2. Challenge Kit upon registration on the Challenge Day, 31st Aug
    • Challenge Number Tag (front and back)
    • Challenge License (Scorecard-one per team)
    • Bottle of Water
    • Challenge Code Breakers (One per team - you need this to break codes. It's like a "legend" ( ie. 1=A, 2=B, 3=C ..)
    • Poncho (It's a rain or shine event)
    • Pen
SMRT CHALLENGE IS ABOUT..
  • Solving clues to locate the challenge route and stops
  • locating 5 challenge stops to complete missions (mental and/or physical) related to courtesy and safety and collect one part of the code that Dr Evil had planted at each stop.
  • Completing race in shortest time while practicing safe and gracious behavior in SMRT network
  • Breaking code to save SMRT's network from sabotage
HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED

STEP 1
  • From 8.15am, challenge clues for respective categories will be flashed intermittently on stage (we need to write this clue down, this clue tells us which 2 boundary stations/bus interchange we have. This 2 stations or bus interchange will be the 1st and last stop of the 11 station route which we have to follow. So it's like the boundary, it limits the route. You get it?)
  • Teams to decipher clue using code breakers provided to determine their challnge route (11 stations)
  • Challenge scenario will be played on stage
  • Challenge clue for the respective categories (ours is OPEN category) will be flashed on screen for 5 mins before each flag-off
  • Teams to move out of challenge base immediately after flag-off
  • Teams unable to decipher clues can approach help officials behind stage to exercise safety net option (you use it when you cannot solve clues, but lets try not to use it) 20 mins will be added to your final race time if you used this option.
STEP 2
  • Teams to locate 5 challenge stops out of the 11 station route
  • Teams to complete a mission at each stop to collect 1 part of a code. There's a total of 5 parts to the code
  • Another 3 clues to 3 specific challenge stops will be available at the first and last stops within your challenge route. Look out for the challenge clue collection point sign. (That means, after we decipher 1st clue, we head to either the 1st or last stop to get another 3 clues that will tell us 3 stations to go. The other 2 clues can only be found along the way in the missions we do)
  • Teams can decide to decipher the 3 clues or to travel along the challenge route to hunt for the 5 challenge stops
  • Clues to the other 2 remaining challenge stops will be given to you by your commanders
  • There is no fixed sequence to the challenge stops (so we can choose to go to the stops by strategy - the route that save the most time)
  • In xia's words: There is 2 option to play this SMRT challenge. 1 is by Chance. 2nd is by Strategy. If you play by chance, you heck care about going to the 1st or last stop to get that 3 clues. You just try your luck by hopping one station to the other along this 11 stations and see if there are any missions to do. By strategy, you go to collect the 3 clues, then along the way find the other 2 clues to complete the 5 challenge stops requirement
STEP 3
  • At each challenge stop, challenge commanders who are beside a challenge marker will hand out mission slips to teams on a first come first served basis
  • Teams will have to perform the missions in the presence of the challenge commanders
  • The Challenge commanders will determine successful completion of missions
  • Eg of mission: crawl under net to retrieve safety messages (example)
  • Our challenge Marker is Pink colour (for open category) so if you see a pink marker at the stop, that means we came to the right place
  • The challenge stops are all mostly around the premises of the mrt stations or bus interchange, not somewhere far.
STEP 4
  • Upon successful completion of missions, the challenge commander will issue 1 part of the code and paste it on your challenge license (scorecard)
  • Teams have to collect all 5 parts of the code, 1 at each challenge stop
  • Once a team has collected all 5 parts of the code, the team has to 1) break the code using the code breaker provided, 2) write the decoded message on the challenge licence, 3) head back to challenge base
STEP 5
  • Upon arriving at challenge base (HDB Hub), a team will be deemed to have successfully completed the challenge only when all four team members deactivate the device and shout "SMRT CHALLENGE!!" (lame lah! lol)
  • Teams must ensure that they have broken the code before "deactivating" the device
  • Team then passes the decoded message on the challenge license to the challenge official. If the message is correct, the team's timing will be clocked at this point and this is known as the "race timing"
  • Team will then hand over challenge license to registration counter to calculate final challenge timing
  • If message is incorrect, the team has to leave the device area and return after rebreaking the code.
DOS AND DON'TS
  • Each team is given THREE safety net options. However each use will result in team having 20 minutes added to final challenge timing
  • Teams will receive 5 minutes "demerit timing" when they are spotted by challenge rangers to have done any of the below stated. Demerit timing will be added onto team's race timing upon completion of the challenge
    • a) did not keep left of the escalator in train stations and bus interchanges (never hold onto the the handrail of escalator also deduct 5 mins! please be good girls and boys that day even though I know its hard)
    • b) running in the train stations or bus interchanges
    • c) standing beyond the yellow line
  • You are NOT ALLOWED to take taxis, if found, there will be demerit timing of 50 mins
  • All 4 team members must stay together through challenge and no substitution of members is allowed at any point.
  • Only registered team members can solve challenge codes and missions for their team, external help cannot be sought (hmm).
  • All team members must wear SMRT challenge t-shirt at all times during challenge and have their challenge number tags displayed on the front of t-shirt( wearing this t-shirt allows u unlimited free access to SMRT MRT (purple line not counted hor, that one is SBS's), LRTS and SMRT BUSES from 9am to 2pm that day during the race)
OTHER RULES TO NOTE
  • Teams have maximum of 3 hours from time of flag off to complete challenge and report back to challenge base
  • All challenge stops closes at 2pm
  • Teams who complete the challenge significantly faster than the shortest possible calculated travelling time, may have their results reviewed by the challenge officials. If teams cannot provide reasonable and satisfactory explanations, they may be deemed to have unfairly utilized modes of transportation (haha too fast also cannot)
  • Teams ARE ALLOWED to bring their own relevant print materials/ publications (so guys, bring bus guide, mrt guide whatever guide if you want)
  • Prize presentation ceremony will be held that day at 2pm
***************************

I know it can sound quite confusing, it's easier if I explain to you guys face to face. There are alot more stuff in the briefing such as rules etc but I can't type anymore or I deem it not as important. If you have any other queries, feel free to ask me okay.

Meanwhile, please 1) give me your tshirt size, 2) remember to bring IC/ matric card on actual day and 3) let's all meet at 8am Toa Payoh MRT on the 31st Aug Sunday. (People who come later than 8.30am will be disqualified). I need you all to come early so I can pass you the t-shirts then you guys can change into it in time. Please also bring breakfast along. Or do you guys want to meet even earlier for breakfast? Suggestions please.

I am so tired from typing!
bahs.

regards,
xia
