Food Hotel Asia

It's Asia's largest international food and hospitality event which is being held in every 2 years. It compromises of 6 main segments which is going to cover the whole of EXPO, and mind you, it's the whole of EXPO. The 6 segments are FoodAsia, Bakery and Pastry, Wine and Spirits Asia, Hotel Asia, Hospitality Style Asia and lastly Hospitality Technology Asia.

I'm certainly 100% interested for it, but most probably only the first few segments will interests you guys but let me assure you, it's enough. The admission tickets is 80 bucks for a one day pass. You can have access to ALL segments.

However, you can choose to pre register to get yourself a free ticket. Too good to be true, nah. Try it and go ahead and register yourself, you might get it. And the exhibition is held from April 22-25.

This is the website. http://www.foodnhotelasia.com/

Updates on the Bangkok Trip

Good news good news, everything is confirmed now. Hotel has been booked and hooray, the rooms are available and transaction is smooooth :) :) Not like the hotel booking at Phuket. Here are several announcements that you should know.

Important Updates for Bangkok Trip

#1: Melodie will be joining the trip so its gonna be a 9-person group. Delon say their taxi don't have 4-person cap one so we can squeeze 4 in one cab, and 5 in another.

#2: We will be staying in Samran Place Hotel, have asked for non-smoking, high floors for us. For all of you, I requested for twin-beds (separate) but for mil and sisters, I asked for a king sized bed (so they can share). Because actually mildred is taking a twin room for the 3 of them (shhhhh.) Hopefully, they don't find out.

#3: I booked the hotel via Hotels2Thailand which is so much better than Asiarooms. Kelvin, you may want to book via this link too. Because they don't deduct your money until there is vacancy, not like Asiarooms. Plus, they give free insurance to everyone. Shiok, now we got double insurance, from Tigerairways AND Hotels2thailand. They also have attached some complimentary coupons which we can use when shopping/dining/massage. In the email, they also have a map of the hotel which we can use to show taxi uncles.

#4: Here are the total costs for everyone. The costs should be fix already, I don't think there will be any changes but in case there are, I will let you guys know. You guys can return me in the next few months, but not too near the travelling dates please 'cause I need money to change also. If you are keen to return NOW, let me know.

* Airtickets include Insurance and Credit Card Transaction Fees.

#5: Please check your emails, I have sent the Hotel Confirmation E-mail and a Word Document named "BKK Guide". It's a 15 page guide that a forum mate collated from everyone's experience. It's very useful, shows you the place to go, opening hours, things worth buying and eating.

#6: My brother confirm can go already, exams not clashed :)

P.S: I still replies from the rest regarding 2nd March outing, anyway is Suki Sushi buffet okay for that day? Or you guys want Minds Cafe?
love,
xia/ events co-ordinator

Dear Members of Mixed Rice,

Good news to share. All of us have been promoted to Directors (of our individual department). As of now, we shall be known as the Board of Directors (whether or not your position has the term 'Director' in it", instead of some officer or in charge. Interested applicants can submit your application to kssmixedrice@gmail.com

In your email, please indicate your name, current position and the new position you are interested in. Please also indicate which position you will like to retain after new members have joined the Mixed Rice.

As we are pretty short handed, all Directors are allowed (and strongly encouraged) to apply for another position, till more members are recruited to relieve our burden a little.

Bangkok Scams

Yo Mixed Rice in the House,

I was surfing for more information about backpacking and Thailand when I came across this.

It's worth reading.

Closed? Best check for yourself: Tall tales by touts
In Thailand, there are many touts selling tour services and one common trick that they will use is to station themselves near major attractions (i.e. such as grand palace, wat po) and approach tourists telling them that the attraction that they are planning to visit is close for the day (a common reason they use is that it's buddha day and religious ceremonies are being held so the temple is closed etc.). They will then suggest to bring tourists to alternative places (usually this place called 'lucky buddha' temple which is opened to public only once a year and it just so happened to be that day!) at a small cost. If the tourists agree to go along, what happens is that the touts will bring the tourists to various shops offering 'special discounts' - these touts earn much money from tourists' spendings in these shops.

Jewellery and Gem Scams: Unlucky Lucky Buddha Temple
Touts will use all kinds of stories to trick you into visiting this place called the Lucky Buddha Temple. They will spin tall tales of people striking rich after visiting the temple. At the temple, you might be made to donate some money to the temple as an offering. What happens after is that you will 'bump' into a person who will offer you a tip on how to earn a quick buck (it's as if the lucky buddha has indeed brought good luck!). Basically, the story that the person will tell you is that the gems in bangkok are really cheap..and one can make a quick buck just by buying gems from bkk and bringing it back to one's home country to resell. To make the story more convincing, the person will take out receipts of purchase and resale as proof. To trick singaporeans, the person will also lie about how this well-known jewellery shop in singapore will readily buy such gems. After all these have been said, if you appear interested..the person (or he'll signal to his accomplice - usually a tuktuk driver) will offer to bring you to this shop that's offering very special discounts on that particular day.

The above information was extracted from SgTravelCafe

Conclusion

Never be too trusting towards others, especially strangers.

Remember Mr Bandit, the Taxi Driver @ Phuket? That was a fine example.

I guest we should always disguise our identities as tourist when travelling, so as to avoid being potential victims, but I guess if we travel as a Mixed Rice tour group, that is a challenge which is near impossible to fulfill. =P

Dark Secrets of Hotels Exposed

Think twice when before using anything from your hotel room.

A distant relative, who used to work as a chamber maid in a hotel told us never to use the towels provided, because they are often used to clean dry the toilet after washing. Even though these towels are later sent to the laundry before placing them in the guest rooms, but the thought of it is such a turn off.

I used to work in this particular inn during my polytechnic industrial attachment. Bedsheets are seldom changed if they look clean enough, and clean is usually defined as "no stains". Pillow cases, towels and floor mats are washed in the same washing machine at the same point in time. Imagine using a towel that was washed with the soil/shit stained floor mat to clean your face. Goodness Gracious.

For people who like to remove your shoes before entering the hotel room, I strongly advise you against doing so, because most (if not all) chamber maid clean the floor or vacuum the carpets with their shoes on (and who knows where or what they have been stepping on previously), so regardless of how much effort they put in while cleaning the room, there is a hygiene and cleanliness factor to consider.

Each time I tried explaining to my friends (don't worry guys, I don't specifically mean the Mixed Rice crew), they think that I was being paranoid and excessively hygenic. Some of them even felt that I was not maximising my money spent by helping the hotels to save on laundry costs etc. Even when I explained about what I have seen and done while working in the inn, they thought that such things only happened to other people, or cheaper/budget hotels or inns.

Thank goodness to those people who took managed to take such videos, more people will be convinced by what I have said.

Thus, Dear Friends if you think I was being a paranoid clean freak to wear my slippers around the hotel rooms, insist on bringing/using my own towels after bathing and wearing long pants to sleep, you may want to think twice about it, because I have got my reasons for doing so.
