Make Rice

Hey all!

Mildred and I got this random idea of setting up a cook blog where we can exchange recipes, share cooking experience or just post up some food review post.. regarding food we have eaten outside and all that. I thought it was quite cool 'cause quite a few people in the group cook or bake. Even if you don't, I'm sure you are a foodie as well.

So here's the blog - Make Rice. Make rice is actually a typo mistake from Mildred over the MSN conversation and I actually thought the mistake was nice! haha i mean it makes sense - make rice rhythms with mixed rice and make rice sounds like zuo fan in chinese - cooking!

Must support the blog okay, will not set it private.

Euro 2008 has finally hit its Finals with Germany going to play Against Spain. It's can be considered the clash of the Giants. Both team came off strong from the start even though Germany was shaky at the start of the tournament. This time round, i have no particular sides but perhaps Spain because i had betted on them to win this compeition.

Thanks Giving

I'm glad peng started the ball rolling, let me now do my fair share of thanks giving! Anyway, as a whole, I enjoyed the bangkok trip although to be really honest, Phuket's trip seems more crazy and fun. I guess we are not so much of the hardcore shopping people altogether (me excluded, hehs) maybe the group suits crazy adventure / team activity stuff more. Island getaway in December, anyone? :D I feel so empty with no trips to look forward to, sighs.

Taken from NTU Food Court

Anyways, I managed to take this photo in NTU's new food court. I had to take a pic of it when I saw it, it just brings a smile to my face! I bet the aunty must be wondering why this small little girl is taking photo of my signboard, haha. Now, everytime I visit this foodcourt, I will be reminded of the group. How sweet~

Many Thanks to

Delon: For playing the leadership role in the trip. Thank you truckloads for co-ordinating on the traffic especially (negotiating prices with cab/tuktuk drivers. Also for making the decision when the group don't know what to do or is stuck for whatsoever reasons. Not forgetting the morning knocks/calls. Lastly, for always having sufficient amount of crap and jokes to keep the group going and laughing even in the middle of the night/ broad daylight haha, way to go!! I don't know for the rest but I feel very safe in the trip with you handling the leader role. On a personal note, thank you for the reassurance & accompany when I thought things didn't go well or when I was upset over school stuff/pms-ing during the bkk days. It really helped.

Peng: No problem about the research, I enjoy planning and researching that kinda stuff..especially when things turn out well. No worries, my co-ordinator role is here to stay unless you guys decide to kick me out and have me replaced for whatever reason *sobs*. Erm, thanks for not complaining this time round haha. & for being easy-going with regards to the plans and decisions. Don't be embarrassed about not contributing much, I've seen ur effort in planning events as well. You can help by planning MORE events! hehs.

ZQ: I'm still not sure what heroic acts you did, can I have a full update on this? It's that river cruise trip you guys went right, how did ZQ lead the group? Haha anyway ZQ thanks for always willingly being our bully victim.. and having that big heart as to not scold us little brats lol. Although I agree with peng that you need to be more decisive in terms of shopping! if not you'll end up spending too much time on one item and end up sacrificing the other better stuff elsewhere! hehs, shopaholic advice. I kinda agree with mil that I hardly hear much from you regarding your feelings towards Mixed Rice. I hope you love us as much as the group hearts you! haha.

Mil: Thanks for helping me out when I had excess money in my hands haha.. (although it turned out to be not enough in the end). Thank you for helping me make some shopping decisions as well, like the "this one nicer of that one nicer". Anyway, I wish we drew the caricature at Memorial bridge night market.. kinda regretted not staying for it. Lastly, for helping the group take photographs and being the other photographer for the trip. I was a tad lazy in taking photos this time round, thank god you managed to take more pixels for the group.. that being said, when can I see the photos from your side!

Mel: Thanks for always being so enthu and cheery in the entire trip, you bring truckloads of energy to this otherwise old and aging group! hahaha. It's a joy having you around to make us do crazy things and to suggest siao-on activities after each day. It's sad that we didn't have any bonding sessions in anyone's room, like what you mentioned. No worries, we can always do it in one of the gatherings next time.

Sinyee, Yang and Marvina: To you siblings, I'm so glad you guys joined us in our MR trip, it's always nice to have new faces in the outings (can develop new chemistry and expand the warm MR family). I like how our group extend invitations and gatherings to our siblings (who knows, maybe parents next time!) ... it gives this nice homey vibes to the group culture which is really sweet. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoyed the 5 days with us MR! I'm glad I got to know the siblings of my pals more, please drop by in future gatherings as well!

Kel: Thankeww so much for the review of the trip, it really helped us a lot in planning where to go and what to avoid in BKK. Its a pity we can't go together in this trip but not to worry, as long as the group is here to stay, there will still be plenty of group trips in the future (right?!) ... I'm glad you enjoyed the trip, good luck finding a job and we should meet up real soon. How's the Euro finals meetup going??!

Yilin: Girl, it's been eons since I saw you and I wonder how you are or what you have been doing these days. Your birthday gift is still with me! I really hope you can come out and meet up with us real soon, it's so difficult to contact you :( We need more girl power in this group (if not it'll be overwhelmed by XY chromo) .. I miss having you around, hope to see you soon.

Yaolong: We miss you so much! There are times at BKK where we go "If only yaolong is here, we will......" Look how significant you are in our group, you are always on our mind! You are away for way too long, it's time to come back to catch up and go crazy on drinks & stunts with the group! Please please update us on the dates that you'll be coming back, let's make sure that we jam up your schedule here and turn it like December 2007 once again (all packed with MR events). Take good care there and don't forget Mixed Rice!

I guess that's all for the thanks giving and messages for the group. I'm really glad to be in a group like MR and I'm so happy that we've become closer over the years. I look forward to more bonding and more crazy dramatic events with you guys. Cheers!

ps: we have 5 Mixed Rice birthdays in July, woohoo! Can we have a kick ass celebration pretty pretty please. Can everyone throw in some wacky ideas or something, I'm running out of creative juices.

There isn't a new post since all of us came back from bangkok. All of us must have been pretty busy I guess. But that is not an excuse to neglect this place.

This time round, I thought of a new activity for the group. Instead of doing reflections like the phuket trip (which I presume everyone has done during the bbq), let's do a thanksgiving post this time.

I hope everyone can give thanks to those who had learned something from others. I'll start first (of course).

I will like to thank...

shuxia for making this trip another great success for mixedrice. You deserve alot of credits for painstakingly doing all the research stuff. Sometimes I'm embarrassed at myself that I have much to the group. Nevertheless, continue to put in your effort and our group will continue to grow closer.

delon for helping out so much with all the logistics stuff. You really planned well and provided lots of transport (taxis, tuk tuks, mrt) to ensure we are never lost in a foreign land. Many thanks too for showing us the way to different places and sometimes lending me money too! LOL

mil for ........... (I can't think of anything yet). Actually I will like to thank you for helping to looking after my sis while she is under your care (we had our fair share of sister babysitting rite?) thanks again for that, it really relieved a huge load off me.

zhiqin for being the unexpected hero. Seriously, I'm very much surprised that you manage to take on the leadership role of the group when delon is not around. thanks for all the taxi-hailing and company all this time. But you really need to work on that little bit of confidence, maybe next time you shouldn't spend so much time thinking of things to buy. Just do it. haha

mel for her happy-go-lucky nature and always siao on for all the crazy stuff with me. Maggots eating no longer scare us anymore right? LOL. maybe our next trip, we should do something even more exhilarating (of course not with your sis around).

the younger members, sinyee, zhiyang and marvina. sorry to clump the three of you all together, but I can't really think of what to write over here. I just hope you guys have seen the bonding between us and will be inspired to share this joy around. Caring for your friends is the first step to making every group successful. Meet up for more outings in the future!

kel for providing all the insightful review of the bangkok trip before we left. It definitely helped us a lot. Even though we didn't go together, but there will be a next time. So look forward to that. It'll be the actual mixedrice outing with everyone present.

lin for making the effort to come for mixedrice outings. I don't know whether you have the time to read this but I haven't seen you for so long and we should meet up soon. Do take a little time off to gather with the rest of us again. Bonding sessions should never be one-sided. Do keep in mind that we are always there and we always care.

yaolong for remembering us (I hope?). Going overseas should not be an excuse to forget us. We are looking forward to your return and let's have more drinking sessions! Do stay in contact and not disappear from our lives.

I'm done. Everyone please try to post something ok? I know sometimes its difficult and weird to share these mushy words around. But trust me, it really makes a difference.

till then, I'm off to work again.

My brief review on the trip, hopefully able to help you guys on the trip to Bangkok even though it might have been facts that you guys already known. Detailed version check my blog out.

Firstly, thanks ShuXia for the recommendation. Samran Place was a great hotel. I couldn't find any flaws from this hotel, other than its location, which couldn't even be considered a flaw actually. Great service, Great food, Great environment (less those mosquitoes) and Great people. At this hotel, trust me, their room service is a must. Try their Fried hot and spicy noodles with Shrimp. And also, their Chilli Seafood Pasta. These two mentioned food is a must to order, very nice, but for Choon Peng, a little sad cos you don't eat chilli. Never try their Pad Thai with Shrimps or Pork Chop.

Breakfast at the hotel is great, you can try all their breakfast because it's all nice. Breakfast's at 2nd storey. To eat their free breakfast, give them your key at the 1st storey reception counter and they'll give you the breakfast voucher in return, then proceed up to 2nd storey for your breakfast.

To go to other places, meter cab is very highly recommended. Never take taxi or tuk tuk that is being parked outside the hotel (they dig a hole out of your pocket). The taxi can sit perhaps 5-6 people, unlike Singapore, provided all of you are SKINNY enough. There's a security guard or hotel staff outside the hotel, let them know where you are going and they will ensure you won't get cheated and get a cab for you. Travelling by meter cab is the only mode of transport you should take. Not even MRT or BTS is worth the money. If you calculate it well, meter cab is the best. If they charge you 100 baht to travel around, reject. And also, it's hard to get meter cab at night because of the heavy jam, so do as you deem fit. Jams are common so expect that.

Pratunam market and Platinum mall are just 10 minutes walk away, Central World is 15 minutes walk whereas Erawan Shrine is around 20-15 minutes walk. If you want to go Erawan Shrine, go during weekdays. And TAKE NOTE, don't buy those incense/flowers/candles from those stores outside, buy from the one inside. If you you are buying anything other than the three i mentioned, you are being 'chopped'. All the 3 items i mentioned shouldn't cost more than 200 baht so if it is, it simply means you are being CHEATED.

Now mentioning the market, i've been to Suan Lam, Khao San Road and Chatuchak market, and also the thieves market (Nakhon Kasem). All are worth going except the thieves market. Never go there cos it's so cramped and there's NOTHING to buy. They simply sell second hands electronics stuff like dvd player and TV, they sell rifles, pistols also (STUNNED) and perhaps some dirty jewellery. GOSH! Other than that, those market i mentioned were great.

Stuff @ Siam are not worth the money, they either sell branded stuff if not, their stuff can be found in Singapore including the same price range. Buy your clothes at places like Platinum Mall etc...

My girlfriend did her Manicure and Pedicure @ 29 Plaza, you can go through a link from MBK at the 2nd storey, so girls, please TRY. There's tons of stuff to buy at MBK as well. And also, you might notice lots of MK restuarants in Bangkok, hop in and try their duck, it's nice, if you want to try their steambost, go ahead as well, it's cheap.

At Siam discovery, on the top floor, there's a Dim Sum buffet, try it if you want. Little variety but cheap and nice. At Siam Paragon, visit this ice crean outlet called fudge and cream factory (can't remember what is the exact name but it's something like that), try their mint ice cream, superb.

Their KFC has this roasted chicken drumlets, it's damn nice. For A&W, you don't have to travel all the way to Siam, go out of our hotel, turn left and walk all the way straight, there's one just ahead there, perhaps about 5 minutes walk or lesser.

For places are Siam/MBK, you can walk there, it's just 10 minutes or lesser walk to there. Try their coconut ice cream, juice or cake if you happen to see one, not including those from the street side hawker.

Be careful of counterfeit notes PLS!!! Never buy cigarettes or any DFS items from Thai Airport back to Singapore without declaring - you have to pay tax if you declare, so in another words, DON"T BUY!

Pantip Plaza has lots of IT crap, i bought my camera battery there, thinking that my current one is spoil and that the charger don't seem to work. In the end, i found out that it's because my charger require a higher voltage which the hotel doesn't provide. To charge, you need a special adapter as well (not sure please call me and ask) as they use different socket as compared to Singapore.

It happened to be Euro 2008 Season. I thought i wasn't able to show because the hotel only provide ESPN. But i was smart enough to try the Thai channel so if you guys want to watch it, switch to channel 2/3 for those soccer action. It will be screened 11pm and 1.45am BANGKOK TIME.

Mosquitoes are expected so bring insect repellent. No need to spray on your body, simply spray the room's corner and the opening at the door like twice is a day? Perhaps once before you left for your day activities and when you come back.

It was a nice trip, thankfully, i did my research and also thanks to the guide ShuXia provide. It's a pity i can't go with you guys but i hope i can help made your trip a better one with this blog entry. Enjoy guys,...there might be something i missed out. Perhaps one of you want to call me and i'll tell you more....
